Symmetric white noise can induce directed current in ratchets

چکیده
Symmetric white noise can induce directed current in periodic potentials that lack reflection symmetry ~termed ratchets!. The requirement for this to occur is that the white noise possesses non-Gaussian statistical properties with all its odd numbered cumulant correlation averages vanishing identically. The fluctuationinduced current is elucidated for three types of white noise: ~i! symmetric white Poissonian shot noise with exponentially distributed amplitudes, ~ii! two-state diffusion noise being composed of two thermal Nyquist noise sources that successively are switched on and off by dichotomic noise, and ~iii! randomly flashing Gaussian white noise. Because the latter two noise sources are not composed of independent increments, the resulting ratchet dynamics x(t) is non-Markovian. The current versus white-noise intensity typically exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence with a maximum assumed at a suitably tuned noise level. @S1063-651X~97!06110-2#

Computation of Transport in Brownian Ratchets
In Brownian ratchets the presence of random fluctuations (noise) can lead to directed diffusion in a periodic potential under nonequilibrium conditions, i.e. to a net unidirectional current. Such processes are thought to underlie macromolecular transport in biological cells and muscle contraction, and they provide a possible basis for nanoscale machinery. In flashing ratchets, where the periodi...

We have elucidated the effect of statistical asymmetry on the directed current in Smoluchowski-Feynman ratchets driven by chaotic noise. Based on the inhomogeneous Smoluchowski equation and its generalized version, we arrive at analytical expressions of the directed current that includes a source term. The source term indicates that statistical asymmetry can drive the system further away from t...
متن کاملConstructive role of noise: Fast fluctuation asymptotics of transport in stochastic ratchets.
The constructive role of random fluctuations is studied in the context of transport in stochastic ratchets. We discuss the interplay of independent white (thermal) and discrete (external) noises and their generation of transport in anisotropic potentials. The constructive cooperation of such fluctuations is most apparent in the asymptotic limit of fast discrete-valued noise, a limit which prese...
متن کاملBrownian motors: noisy transport far from equilibrium
Transport phenomena in spatially periodic systems far from thermal equilibrium are considered. The main emphasize is put on directed transport in so-called Brownian motors (ratchets), i.e. a dissipative dynamics in the presence of thermal noise and some prototypical perturbation that drives the system out of equilibrium without introducing a priori an obvious bias into one or the other directio...
متن کاملGiant enhancement of diffusion and particle selection in rocked periodic potentials
– We investigate the motion of an overdamped Brownian particle in a periodic potential with weak thermal noise and a time-periodic unbiased (i.e. 〈F (t)〉 = 0) external driving force F (t). By introducing appropriate “waiting-periods”, where F (t) vanishes, an arbitrarily strong enhancement of diffusion in a symmetric potential is possible. In asymmetric periodic potentials (ratchets) the net fl...
